Daniel Hawes, 24, is the 2019 winner of the Irish Bowl Award at Harper Adams University. The award is given annually to students who are highly employable and involved in the university community in a number of ways.

Through his academic career at Harper Adams, Daniel invested his time in his studies as well as extracurricular activities on and off campus. Daniel has represented the university at a national level as a member of the Harper Adams team at the NIAN Agronomy Cup in 2017 as well as captaining the winning team in the Hutchinson-Velcourt Cereals Challenge. On campus, he was the Vice President of the Harper Adams Christian Union, an active member of the Rowing Club, and a student ambassador for the Agriculture courses answering questions during open days from prospective students.
Daniel also followed international pursuits, taking a six month placement at Cornell University, USA, where he continued to maintain excellent results in his modules. However, Daniel has always felt “happiest when in the field” and, after graduation, has undertaken placement with Hugh Lowe Farms to grow his agricultural experience from vineyards to wheat fields.
Principal Lecturer in Agriculture, Dr Russell Readman, said: “Dan is an excellent example of a student from a non-farm background who is achieving at a high level. Throughout his studies he has balanced his academic and extracurricular activities extremely well. Dan is an exceptional student, both academically and in terms of extracurricular activities, and will be an excellent ambassador for Harper Adams in the future.”
Daniel was presented with the Irish Bowl Award by Chloe Blyth, pictured right. At graduation, Daniel was also presented with the Cefetra Grain Award for ascertaining the highest mark in his dissertation on grain production, management or trading. Daniel graduated from BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Crop Management.
